If you're thinking about going electric, but are getting flashbacks to historic news articles about EVs catching fire following an accident, we're here to set your mind at ease.
Firstly, the latest generation of EVs have been carefully engineered to avoid this possibility, making fires extremely unlikely in the event of a crash. Modern EV batteries are housed in tough casings, and the cars themselves have safety systems that automatically isolate the battery in the event of a crash.
Secondly, it's important to remember that the rare instances of fires gained more coverage than safety concerns in petrol/diesel vehicles, because at the time electric was a new technology for motoring. Don't forget that electric vehicles are also safer in the sense that they don't carry a tank of flammable fuel.
In terms of other safety features, many electric cars are based on conventional petrol/diesel models, and are therefore built to meet the same strict design and manufacturing regs. The vehicles are then tested by Euro NCAP, with almost all performing as well as their petrol/diesel counterparts.
